Burton SC hosted leg 5 of the Waples Wines sponsored series over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd September. The weekends report can be found on the website. The series comprises 6 legs and with only the final event at Notts county in a few weeks to go the tension is rising.
After legs hosted by Dovestone, RWYC, Rutland, Bassenthwaite and Burton the results show that this years series has been well supported with 57 boats eligible for the series having taken part. So far boats have represented 18 clubs although obviously the main supporters have been from the host clubs with Dovestone and Burton providing the largest numbers so far.
The results to date are attached . from these you will see that the current series leaders Andy Farmer and Rebecca Ogden from Notts County are in a strong position, closely followed by Chris and Marion Bowen from Northampton. In 3rd place are previous series winners Graham Massey and Lucy Clough from Dovestone. By my calculation the series could be won by up to 9 boats , so there is definitely all to play for at the final event.
In the classic fleet if anything things are even tighter. The classics of Graham and Alastair Lamond (617), and president bobby Salmond and Dave Hill (202), have been locked together all through the series. They are just a point apart in 6th and 7th places overall at present.
In the Silver fleet the lead is currently held by Burton fleet captain Gary Butler and Paul McCarthy.
The fleet return to Notts County for the final series event on the 7th and 8th October for what promises to be a bumper climax to the series. The series prizes will be awarded after sailing.
