Dovestone hosted round 2 of the Waples Wines Northern Travellers Series over the weekend of the 20th and 21st May 2017. Set in the Peak National Park the scenery is stunning and the visitors enjoyed the usual friendly Dovestone Sailing Club welcome. The fleet included current World Champions Steve Goacher and Tim Harper on the Saturday and Class president Bobby Salmond who sailed his legendary classic no 202 Silver Fox.
On Saturday three races were held and as expected Steve and Tim lead with two wins to David McKee and Mal Hartland's one. In third place overnight were Andy and Sally McKee sailing Andy Goddard's 4022. The wind had been blustery at times and fully tested the fleet. On Saturday evening there was a stunning curry or chilli supper followed by a not too taxing nautical and general knowledge quiz.
There were two races on Sunday and it is noteworthy that Colin Pierce and Mandy Thackray managed to pull off well executed port tack fliers on each start. In the first Andy and Sally sailed to win after a close battle with David and Mal that meant the last race was the decider. David and Mal lead from the start, however they were hauled in and then passed by Andy and Sally with a lap to go. At the last mark however, David and Mal managed to find a shift on the left, and went on to win the race and the Open. Bobby and Dave Hill improved in every race to record a creditable 6th place overall in their over 60 year old boat.
