Portavadie Marina Scottish Travellers

Now in its 4th year, the Scottish Travellers Series has established itself as one of the UK’s best club racing circuit for Flying Fifteen owners. In 2012 a total of 62 individual boats made it to the start line over the series with 37 at the series finale at Loch Lomond.

The series was launched in 2010 to encourage those who don’t normally travel to visit similar sailing clubs and participate in weekend racing away from the cut and thrust of the open and championship events. The emphasis has always been on the social aspect of the weekends and the interaction and development amongst the smaller fleets in Scotland.

Sponsorship always plays a big part in any series and the Scottish Flying Fifteens are delighted to have the continued backing of Henri Lloyd, Saturn Sails, and Loch Lomond Distillery. The headline sponsor for the 2013 series will be Portavadie Marina who have supported the series from the beginning and have been host to several events.

The sailing venues are mainly spread around central and west of Scotland, however, in 2012 the series visited the Scottish outpost of Derwent Reservoir for a weekend of top quality racing and socialising. This proved to be very popular and 2013 will see a repeat of this with the series event being incorporated into the UK Northern Championships.

New to the circuit and kicking the series off for 2013 are Loch Tummel Sailing Club. Loch Tummel has a long history of hosting great sailing events and we look forward to visiting in May.

Although not part of the series we mustn’t forget the 2013 Scottish Championships being hosted by Holy Loch sailing Club on the 22nd/ 23rd June and being raced on the open waters of the Firth of Clyde, a fantastic racing area that has been host to Etchells and Impala European Championships and many other national class championships. This is an event not to be missed especially with sponsors Loch Fyne Oysters supporting the class again by providing all the crews with a delicious dinner on the Friday night.

So if you have a Flying Fifteen or you are thinking of getting one, the Scottish Travellers Series has something for everyone. The scenery is great, the racing is fun and the hospitality and craic after the sailing is worth turning up for just on its own.
